This painting is of the Coorong at Policeman’s Point and is a comment on the management of that landscape. The dramatic lighting is intended to add tension and the colouration of the water to indicate heightened salinity as the insufficient water-flows at the mouth of the Murray River fail to deliver fresh water to the Coorong which is required to balance the salinity as its sea water evaporates. The samphire interspersed with bare scalds of salt damage, the abandoned boat and nets and the overturned bucket, even the Chestnut Teal, one of the few species of ducks capable of tolerating high levels of salinity, are all intended to add to the sense of despair as the management of the water in the Murray River continues to allow the ecosystem of the Coorong to deteriorate.

What is a Giclee Print?

The picture has been printed using a giclée process with Epson pigment inks on Breathing Color Lyve Canvas: an archival certified, premium, heavy (450gsm) matte canvas. The print has also been finished with a Hahnemühle protective coating, which seals the surface and protects it from dust and fingerprints, increases moisture resistance and helps to protect from fading caused by UV rays. Tests show that this combination of materials produces long life prints, but as with all prints, exposure to direct sunlight may eventually affect the print.
